Effects of the Surface Roughness of Six Wood Species for Furniture Production on the Wettability and Bonding Quality of Coating

Wood surface roughness, free energy (SFE), wettability, and bonding quality for water-based acrylic coatings were investigated. The samples tested in this study included Pinus radiata, sylvestris, Larch, Hemp oak, Catalpa tree, Camphor. Sandpaper with grits of 180, 240, 320, 400, 500 was utilized to sand wood surfaces. van OSS-Chaudhury-Good equation (vOCG) used calculate the SFE values. modified model (M-D) wettability based on contact angle change rate (K value). higher K value, faster approaches equilibrium. A cross-cut test evaluate coating’s quality. anatomical structure has an impact roughness hardwood. equilibrium is influenced by species sandpaper grit size. Sanding can make more wettable. Radiata pine that had been sanded 180 highest value. After finishing waterborne acrylic, hardwood a slightly better coating adhesion than softwood. oak lowest (0.6) value (0.82). best (0.4) supplied camphor (0.13). Wettability terms values good indication determining coatings.
